We’ve all been there, trying desperately to have an intelligent conversation with a man who can’t keep his eyes off of “the girls.” Seriously? My eyes are up here, buddy. And then again, men aren’t the only ones who fall prey to the coercive power of large breasts. The amount of padding in Victoria’s Secret bras is enough to fill out a shirt without even having boobs to put in the bra; they can pretty much stand on their own, and women are obsessed with looking bigger in the breast department.
It’s no secret that big boobs are everywhere in America. Plastered on the front of every style magazine with a picture of a woman with cleavage. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 286,254 breast augmentations were performed in 2014 alone.
As fit chicks, sometimes we end up sacrificing perky boobs to strength training. Body fat percentage drops, and we kiss our girls goodbye! Competitive fit women often resort to breast implants because most of the contest judges vote for bustier women, preferring a more feminine look. Even though it’s almost impossible to be naturally busty after your pectoral muscles reach a certain point.
Money aside, these procedures come at a cost. They can either have the implants placed under the pectoral muscle, which often causes more scar tissue, and the need for a longer recovery time, or above the pectoral muscle, which can lead to breast migration and ruin the career of a competitive female lifter. Not to mention, recovery time. After an implant procedure, the patient has to stay away from lifting for six weeks and chest workouts for up to 6 months. Laying off the chest flys for 6 months?! Not happening. We’ve seen botched boob jobs on celebrities like Tori Spelling. So thanks, but no thanks.
Sometimes, too much of a good thing isn’t so good. Especially when it’s silicone.
On the other hand, being naturally busty comes with its draw-backs too. Fitness model and Instagram Celebrity, Lindsey Pelas revealed some of the downsides of being a woman with unusually large breasts. She’s a size 30H, which is pretty frickin’ huge, so she knows what it’s like to be well-endowed.
You always look vulgar in regular clothing. It can be a T-shirt, a floral dress, a wedding dress, a nightgown, whatever. When you’re busty, you just kind of look like a porn star [by] accident.
The Louisiana native is often accused of having breast implants when her bust is all-natural. She complains,
People always assume your boobs are fake. Why would you get them done so big? Who in their right mind would get DDDs?
The truth is, the American public always has an opinion on women with big boobs. Whether it’s busty models or breastfeeding mothers, someone is going to say something.
There are now 47 states with laws that protect the rights of mothers to breastfeed in public. Despite this legislature, women continue to face harassment because boobs are just too distracting.
Breastfeeding is quickly becoming one of the most popular blogging topics in America. Women have turned to internet forums to vent about the humiliation they face from the public and media for feeding their children in public. PAA.LA is a blogging, breastfeeding mom who spreads awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding past infancy and encourages advocacy for other breastfeeding moms. In a post from 2013, the mom expressed her annoyance when finding out that one of her breastfeeding photos, shared on a Facebook page for other breastfeeding moms, had been banned. She says,
Breastfeeding is one of the most basic parts of raising a human that should be remembered and appreciated, a part that we should all be proud of. But apparently, this snapshot of a mother nurturing her children was too much for Facebook and they have deemed it unacceptable.
Breastfeeding mothers are pretty pissed off with how sexualized breast have become in America, and I think most women are too.
The general anger over breast-related sexual harassment is what set off the nationwide protest called, “Free the Nipple.” Lina Esco, the director of the 2014 film that started it all, wanted to “launch a campaign to decriminalize the female areola,” but was banned from several websites like Facebook, Google, Google Plus, Instagram, and Youtube. Not that accessing porn from those websites is a bad thing, but there’s no way we can just have nipples out in the open like that. What a scandal!
There are only 13 states where it is entirely legal for women to walk around topless as men do. Other states either have ambiguous laws about topless freedoms or outlaw it completely. Though New York is technically a “topless” state, the NYPD continue to arrest topless women. Several female celebrities, like Miley Cyrus, have complained about the double standard, but inappropriate nudity and “sexual content” continues to include women’s breasts being uncovered. It’s just too dangerous. What is behind this boob-session?
The weird thing with this boob obsession is that breasts don’t really play a part in sex, like, at all. An anthropologist, Clellan Ford, and ethnologist Frank Beach did a study on 191 different cultures, and only 13 considered breasts to be sexually significant. Only nine of those preferred large breasts.
The other cultures considered a sexual obsession with breasts to be “unnatural” and even “perverted.” In most cultures, breasts only play a part in the nutrition of children, which women often perform publicly. Yeah, we didn’t need a study to tell us that guys can be perverts when it comes to drooling over our boobs, but it’s nice to know that other people find it a bit weird.
Sex therapist, Susan Block, writes,
After all, the glorification of the female breast as a sex symbol, as opposed to a maternal image, is so pervasive in the West, especially in America, most of us forget that boobs are not genitalia.
Big breasts are especially sought after in America where “bigger is better.” In cultures where women’s breasts aren’t considered sexual objects, large breasts are only preferred because they are symbolic of increased fertility.
Americans have taken the obsession with big boobs so far that there are dating websites like datingbigboobgirls.com or bigtitlove.com. Large breasts are used as an advertising tool everywhere and show up fairly often in OkCupid keyword searches.
Not to mention the existence of a business called Tittygram, where you can pay ten bucks to have a model write a message across her bosom and send it to you. Now that’s stretching it.
Everyone has nipples and lactation glands, even men. There’s something just hypnotizing about the pouches of fat found on women’s chests, and no one seems to know why. Some women even feel more aroused when their partner touches their breasts during sex, but there’s not much scientific reasoning as for why that happens. I’m sure men could come up with some pretty good reasons, considering even looking at a woman’s bust can be enough to get them off.
There are, however, some scientific facts involved with the obsession. Coming from an evolutionary standpoint, the bigger the breasts, the more a woman can provide for her children (apparently).
Besides for evolution, men admit to being mesmerized by just the idea of something being under the curves of a woman’s shirt. There’s something there, and they have a pretty good idea of what it is.
Blogger Alex Alexander admits,
I once heard a woman say that if you want to distract a man, simply don’t wear a bra, regardless of whether your boobs are large or small. And it’s true! There’s an enormous thrill in spotting the outline of someone’s areola, or the push against the clothing that reveals a breast shape.
I’ve even heard of breasts referred to as “love pillows.” So there is obviously a reason to be mesmerized. At the same rate, however, women often suffer the consequences of being sexualized for their breasts, and a little respect would be nice.
We know boobs are awesome, don’t get me wrong, but we are also people, not just walking boob-holders.
I can’t say I’m entirely immune to this obsession either. I’m pretty sure both men and women appreciate breasts, not to the same extent, though. I love pretty, lacy bras and lingerie as much as the next woman, but it would also be nice to go bra-less some days and not get ogled like a piece of meat. To a certain point, this boob-session is natural and even healthy, but it can get creepy real fast.
