Why Sitting is NOT as Harmful as Smoking

Have you heard from your friends, on the internet, or from somewhere else that sitting is considered to be as harmful as smoking? While there is truth behind sitting for many hours isn’t healthy, it doesn’t mean that sitting is as bad as smoking.

This is because sitting and smoking are two completely separate things. While there might be some similarities between these two, sitting and smoking shouldn’t be compared as if they were one and the same.

First of all, there are different types of sitting. For instance, some people can sit for many hours without even standing up while others take short walks every 30-60 minutes.

Such things are highly important as even standing up for a short while is enough to stretch your muscles and speed up your blood flow.

Also, it’s hard to know how much sitting harms a person’s health because it might be influenced by other factors like a poor diet, a lack of exercising, stress, other diseases, and many other things that play an important role in recognizing a person’s health.

However, if you’re still worried that sitting might harm your health and stop you from achieving your fitness goals, then you should do a few things that help to minimize the amount of harm long hours of sitting may cause.

1. Use a Standing Desk

If you work a lot in the office or in any place where you need to sit, then you might consider changing a regular desk to a standing desk. The primary difference between these two is that standing desks are higher and are made to use while a person stands.

As standing requires the body to use more energy than sitting, it makes sure that a person’s blood flow doesn’t get too slow and that the legs don’t get numb after sitting for too long. Of course, standing for a long period of time can make a person tired, especially if that person isn’t used to standing for long hours or doesn’t exercise enough.

So, whether it’s useful to have a standing desk varies from person to person, but in most cases, it’s worth giving a try if there is something that can make your life easier.

2. Rest After Sitting For More Than One Hour

Another easy method you can use to make sure to undue the sitting damage is to stand up and move your body from time to time after sitting. You don’t need to rest after sitting for more than three or five minutes because this is plenty to speed up your blood flow and stretch your muscles.

If there is plenty of space around you, then you can just spend the whole three or five minutes by walking. If there isn’t enough space for a walk, you can do stretching exercises for your entire body and then get back to what you need to do again.

Moreover, remember to keep your posture in check as you sit and use a comfortable chair and desk to make sure that even long hours of sitting couldn’t harm your health.

3. Keep Your Health in Check

Finally, sitting for too long won’t harm you if you lead a healthy lifestyle. It doesn’t mean you have to follow every healthy living rule, but doing such simple things as working out, avoiding overeating, and eating mostly healthy foods is enough to make a huge difference.

If you’re able to follow these simple recommendations, then you don’t need to worry that sitting might be as harmful as smoking. Sitting becomes harmful only for those people who eat mostly junk products, rarely exercise, and sit for long hours without moving at all.
