SMG: How long have you been lifting?
AM: Six years

I haven’t always been this super confident woman on the “boy” side of the gym. It all started when I realized that my metabolism wasn’t what it used to be, and pounds started stacking on. It was my second year of college, and I had always relied on my genes to keep me skinny. I ate like crap, drank nearly every day, and did some cardio here and there. I was spiraling out of control and headed down a self-destructive path. I realized that I needed to get myself healthy, but I was primarily focused on the physicality of it all. I began to do more hours of cardio. And nothing changed. I then decided to try to change my eating habits and began teaching myself how to weight train.

SMG: What gets you through moments of self-doubt?
AM: I’m more happy and confident than I was even on stage with such a “perfect” physique. But it took a long time to get here. What gets me through my self-doubt is taking a step back and realizing that having negative thoughts are not going to get me anywhere. I truly believe in maintaining a positive outlook and body image because that will ultimately give me the life I want and the body that I want too! Instead of getting down on myself and thinking, “I’m fat, “I need to lose weight,” I’m ugly,” I think, “My weight is perfect, and I’m beautiful exactly the way I am.” Although I’m not “perfect,” the way I feel about myself is perfect! I live a life of true happiness everyday and this is something that I want for others.

I’ve always been athletic. So, when I started lifting, I had somewhat of a platform due to my dance background. But my journey was still very tough. I can’t remember how many times I’d think to myself “Is this pain and struggle worth the hassle?” But as I progressed, I just became hungrier and hungrier and it became a part of me. I made the gym a priority rather than a choice. I wanted it more than to sleep and breathe. There is something about having iron in your hands that makes you feel unstoppable. Lifting started off as a dream and ended up being a passion of mine. Once I started seeing my body change, I knew this lifestyle was for me. It was such a beautiful experience. I was in charge of what I wanted to improve, and I was doing it for myself. The gym started becoming a place where I could go to relieve stress and have “me time.”

AC: I’ve been modeling a little over 10 years. It’s such a cutthroat industry due to the fact that image is everything. I remember when I went to meet with my first agency at the age of 15. One of the older models who worked for them had told me, “You look great but have ever thought about losing 5–10 pounds?” At the time, I weighed about 125 pounds. My response, “One thing I’ve never been ashamed of are my latin curves. I love my thick thighs and backside!” I embrace what I was given and don’t wish to look like anyone else.

SMG: What gets you through moments of self-doubt?
AC: Of course, there are days of self-doubt because everyone goes through it, but my flaws and imperfections make me who I am and I wouldn’t want it any other way!

JB: This past February, I was driving thinking about how far I have come with my life, my health and my strength, and my faith. I broke down and cried the happiest of tears, knowing that I changed my life for the better. Such a proud moment of self-gratification.

SMG: What gets you through moments of self-doubt?
JB:I try to remove myself from the situation and look at it from an outside perspective..I also will think of all the love I have surrounding me and all the work I put in day in and day out. Praying at night and counting my blessings in the morning has really helped ground me and shape me to become the person I am today.

You CAN DO ANYTHING, you just have to want it bad enough!
