It seems everyone has their own version of a “must-do” diet these days. Diets promise to do everything from making you lose 50 pounds in two weeks to making your muscles grow 20 percent faster in a matter of days. Despite the title, this won’t be the case here. What we will do is present you with cold hard facts.
Eggs are an awesome source of essential nutrients. They can be used to make some high quality foods that will help you shed some of that Christmas turkey weight you’re still holding on to. Case in point is Britain’s famous businessman Charles Saatchi, who lost 56 pounds in 9 months by eating nine eggs daily and nothing else. If an old businessman can do it, so can you!
Before we get to the details of why you should try this diet, let’s see what’s so great about eggs in the first place:
As pictured above, one large egg is filled with all sorts of healthy stuff. The egg white of one large egg contains 3.6 grams of protein, 17 calories and is very low in fat. The yolk has 55 calories and 2.7 grams of protein. It also holds way more fat than the white but is still very low, clocking in at 4.5 grams of fat. What you don’t see on this picture is the amino acid breakdown of an egg.
Eggs and egg whites contain more BCAAs per gram than any other food. They also contain a high amount of leucine, which is responsible for protein synthesis in your muscles.
In a nutshell, or better yet, eggshell, eggs are nature’s mini starter kits for your daily protein, fat and amino acid intake. After learning all this, eating an egg only based diet doesn’t seem that crazy after all, right?
Now let’s see the benefits of this diet:
Loss Of Water Weight
Don’t get fooled by the initial drop in weight, as it’s probably just water weight. Eggs are very low in carbohydrates, and your body attaches water to it, so your first weight drop is going to be almost all water. Don’t get discouraged by this; all is means is more work in the weight room. This diet is a supplement, not a solution.
Preserving Lean Body Mass
Consuming protein is very important when doing a caloric restriction diet because it helps in preserving lean body mass a.k.a. muscles!
Egg proteins are even better for this cause because they have a perfect score of 100 on the Biological Value score and perfect score of 1.0 on the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score. This is very fancy talk for “get as much of your daily protein intakes from eggs as possible.”
Yes, you will burn fat. The high protein content of eggs will lead to a decrease in the amount of calories needed to feel full. Meaning you will eat less but what you eat will be richer in nutrients. Instead of downing three quarter pounders just to satisfy your hunger, you eat a couple of eggs and feel full.
When you decrease the amount of calories you take in, while simultaneously increasing the amount of calories you burn at rest, the egg diet will result in significant fat loss.
Now that we’ve seen the benefits, it would only be fair to see the flaws of this diet.
This happens because when you drop the carbs, you get less glucose that’s available for your brain. Your body is then forced to turn to ketones to fuel the brain. You might feel a bit lightheaded and less energetic during your workout at first, but this is fine. It happens with these diets.
However, your body will quickly adapt and after a few days you will start to notice your energy levels rising. Some even report that their energy levels are HIGHER than when they ate carbs.
Decreased Physical Performance
Carbs (glucose, to be exact) are the body’s main fuel source and are very important for maintaining optimal performance during physical activities.
As you reduce your carbohydrate intake, your glycogen stores will become depleted, and your body will have to turn towards fat (which you will be burning) and amino acids (needed for building protein, which you need for making gains) for fuel sources.
Here are a couple of free tips for the road: don’t start off with eating only eggs. Mix in some fruits and veggies for digestion fibers and too add some flavor to your diet. Eating nothing but eggs needs special kind of focus and mental strength.
Don’t feel bad about yourself if you can’t stomach it. You basically need to rewrite your brain to stop thinking it needs complex carbs and sugars to work properly.
